Artist's Bio

My name is Raquel Alim and I am a legally blind artist from San Diego, California. I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the young age of 12 and now in my 30’s and not letting blindness stop me from the things I love to do-like creating art.

My vision loss journey hasn’t always been so positive. I stopped drawing for several years in my 20’s and early 30’s because I felt like I wasn’t good enough to create visual art while I was going blind and could no longer see the pencil marks. Over the past two years, I’ve began to change my mindset and accept my vision loss. After some adjustments, I can finally say I am blessed to be drawing and painting again and I never want to feel negative about myself and my condition again.  Art went from a hobby as a child to my passion and I want to share my art with others.

Each of my art pieces tells a story. I painted these two pieces as a reminder to be strong, positive, fierce and see the beauty in everything through rose colored glasses. It reminds me that I can overcome any obstacle.
