Nicole Rubio was born in New York and graduated from the Museum School of Fine Arts, Boston. She migrated to the West Coast and was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa in 1978. For the next thirty years she supported herself as a secretary while wishing to be doing art. On retiring in 2010, she still had enough central vision left to start creating a body of large-scale pastel drawings. The drawings use dress as a metaphor for the unseen emotional world. In 2021 she is still drawing and unwilling to give up the art she has waited so long to do.
