The free, online event will take place on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024 featuring presentations from Erin Kenny, OD, Salus at Drexel University, Michelle Glaze, Foundation Fighting Blindness, and Ben Shaberman,, Foundation Fighting Blindness.

The Foundation Fighting Blindness, the global leader in driving retinal degenerative disease research, will host a webinar for eye care and low vision students and faculty on creating a path forward for newly diagnosed patients with inherited retinal diseases (IRDs), including retinitis pigmentosa, Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease, and Leber congenital amaurosis.

The free, online course will provide a case study approach to highlight the IRD patient journey and the clinician role in guiding a newly diagnosed patient.  This discussion will cover many topics including:

  • Delivering a clinical diagnosis of an IRD
  • Review of the low vision rehabilitation process,
  • Genetic testing and why it is a critical element in IRD patient care
  • Patient referrals to resources that help maintain an independent and healthy lifestyle
  • Clinical trials for emerging therapies

The course will be delivered by:

Erin Kenny, OD, FAAO, Diplomate AAO (LV) received her bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh. Upon graduation, Dr. Kenny obtained her Doctor of Optometry from PCO at Salus University. She completed her residency at The Eye Institute in Low Vision Rehabilitation. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and recently became a Diplomate in Low Vision Rehabilitation. Dr. Kenny is currently a faculty member at Salus at Drexel University, which includes a role as Chief of the William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center and Associate Professor.

Michelle Glaze is the director of professional outreach for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Her passion for the Foundation’s mission is very personal due to her vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa.  Michelle educates eye care professionals across the United States about resources available to patients with a retinal degenerative disease.  Michelle has participated in a multitude of webinars, training sessions, interviews, videos, and podcasts to raise awareness about the Foundation, genetic testing, and clinical research. 

Ben Shaberman has been communicating retinal disease science and research for the Foundation for nearly 20 years. He presents the latest news on emerging therapies at local and national events for patients and families and conducts a variety of science education activities for staff and constituents. Ben hosts the Eye on the Cure podcast series which is available on most major podcast platforms. In addition, he reports on the latest research advancements for the Foundation’s electronic and print publications. Ben also enjoys working with constituents one-on-one to help them understand their retinal disease and the research underway that may benefit them.
