Kim will share how finding the sport of Crossfit, becoming a competitive adaptive athlete and creating a new vision for herself gave her strength to pull herself out of the darkness and into the light. She now shares her story to encourage others to find their own light within themselves.
Kym Dekeyrel was born with a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa and completely lost her sight eight years ago. She became lost within the darkness until the day that her husband brought her to a CrossFit gym. The CrossFit community instantly embraced her for what she could do instead of judging her for what she could not. When she first began competing in 2019, there was no vision division and little understanding of what it’s like to compete as a person with a visual impairment. It is through her and her fellow athletes’ with visual impairments persistence and advocacy that there is now a vision division with appropriate accommodations. Outside of competing in CrossFit, Kym works as a licensed massage therapist and lives in California with her husband and two sons.
