Artist's Bio
"My dream career was to be a magazine or newspaper photographer," recounts Ryck Lent. However, on a day in 1980, just before turning 30, he received a life-altering diagnosis: retinitis pigmentosa (RP). "After that, I knew my life was headed down a different path."
The initial prognosis—total vision loss by age 50—over time proved to be less dire than first thought. In 2021, 41 years later, he retains a narrow tunnel of useful vision. And continues to make photographs.
"These three photographs were made over the last 14 months, during the pandemic," Ryck explains. "I found myself looking more closely at things around me. Looking longer; being patient; discovering beauty right in front of me. And then, working through the constraints of low vision to create beautiful images. For this exhibit, I looked for images that were very different from each other, yet seemed to fit together. I hope you enjoy them."
